taxonomy tuesday – Hyloscirtus princecharlesi

image of frog prince in natural habitatThis beautiful and quite adorable frog was recently discovered from Ecuador and named after His Royal Highness Charles, Prince of Wales.  Researchers decided to name this new species after Prince Charles due to his activism in the halting of tropical deforestation.  He set up the Prince’s Rainforest Project back in 2007 with the objectives to encourage nation’s to slow their deforestation rates and to raise awareness of the link between deforestation and climate change.  Through this project, he also organized the Rainforests SOS Campaign with the following video that features a fat little frog mascot.

Okay, seriously, how endearing was that video?  Well deserved indeed Prince Charles!

I enjoyed reading this article because I don’t normally read about frog taxonomy and it was interesting to see images and characters you wouldn’t see anything like in an entomology journal.  Images like this, for instance:

  1. We need more messages like this. More importantly though, we need more open practitioners. I’m headed to the site in the video now. Thanks for sharing!
