Today marks the start of National Pollinator Week 2012! This event lasts through June 24th and is a celebration to recognize our valuable pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and of course – beetles! This will be the sixth year that the United States Department of Agriculture has recognized and celebrated these important creatures of our lives. Did you know that pollinators are responsible for 1 out of every 3 bites of food that we eat? Amazing! (But also worrisome considering that many pollinator populations appear to be in decline.)
You can visit the Pollinator Partnership website for additional information about pollinators and things that you can do to help. There are events scheduled throughout the country, so see what’s happening in your backyard. Also, if you have a fancy phone with fancy apps, you can download the BeeSmart Pollinator Gardener app for free! This app is dedicated to planting for pollinators – it gives you information on plant types, soil requirements, and bloom colors for native plants in your area that will attract your favorite pollinators. If I had a fancy phone, I would download this app immediately!
